Cylinder deactivation
I had an OBD reader connected on a trip from Scotland to London and back and was able to monitor this.
Cylinder deactivation works in both A and N mode, but is disabled in D. It works in gears 6, 7, 8, and may work in lower gears (but didn't try it). In gear 8, it works up to 81mph indicated on the dashboard. At 82mph it didn't work.
For cylinder activation to start, I estimate torque needs to be below 80NM, and then will remain on 3 cylinders up until about 120NM (these are both guesses based on OBD data). Also, at regular intervals of about 100 seconds, it will deactivate for a few seconds to keep the cat up to temperature.
I can't feel or hear when it is happening. There is no change in engine note or rhythm. However, when it happens, the instantaneous mpg bar will jump from approximately 33mpg to 55mpg. I think this is the only way to tell without connecting an OBD reader.
Sometimes a gradient would mean the torque needed was slightly higher than the threshold set for cylinder deactivation to enable. I found that by reducing throttle ever so slightly would be enough to enable, then I could very gently apply throttle again and remain on 3 cylinders.
